Coventry University. hybrid event on ‘Do you know your AI from your Generative AI?’

My name’s Jono Lowe and I’ve been a teacher for 20+ years and previously a journalist. When Chat GPT launched, I became transfixed. Instantly my job as Head of media and film studies became easier and my results got even better; largely due to me learning how to leverage AI.

I have since read pretty much every book about AI in education there is, became a certified Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert, led AI working parties and training across Multi-Academy Trusts and joined a Coventry University thinktank about AI in Education. I became obsessed with sharing my new found expertise; making websites, presentations, animations, teaching resources, chatbots and so on all from the power of a good prompt and an open mind.

I slowly realised that there is a chronic lack of preparation for young people (and teachers) in this area. Teachers are supposed to prepare young people for the future but may not have much of a clue what that future is going to look like. If you read my blog posts, you’ll see that I believe far too much of UK school’s valuable resources are spent trying to appease Ofsted instead of innovating and genuinely preparing students for the future.

I dreamed up a Level 2 course in AI Literacy and realised I was the first to do this. Thankfully, NCFE agreed and have certified it, meaning students in the UK are now able to study AI, the ethics, tools, prompt engineering (an engineer’s way of describing reading and writing of prompts!) as well as Intellectual Property and academy integrity, meaning that they will be among the world’s first to be genuinely AI literate.

I still work in a large secondary school in the midlands, love teaching more than ever and am happy to hear from like-minded folk who also want to help prepare young people more effectively for the future.

Happy leveraging!

Jono
